Fishing Floating Baits on the Pole

Floating baits are a brilliant way of taking bigger fish. Doing it on the pole also means you can place your bait very precisely

Being able to 'thread' your bait right under overhanging tree branches or deftly next to a lily pad puts you in a very strong position to take fish that are a bit twitchy or simply wise to other methods.

Step 1

Tie your hook to a good quality mono. This is about 10lb strain and secured with a water knot.

Step 2

Make a leader of about four of five feet. Finish it with an overhand loop to connect to your elastic connector.

Step 3

Use nice crusty bread. Break off a good sized piece of about an inch to inch and a half.

Step 4

Put the hook through the crust and back out again.

Step 5

Place the hook-bait into the desired position. The hook and line are out of the water making for great presentation. You can also use a top-kit cup to drop it right where you want it.

Step 6

Be ready for confident takes and to pressure the fish out of the overhanging branches. A heavy weight of elastic is a must.

Step 7

This is an excellent method for good sized doubles. Big specimen carp will put it to the test, so it's best to keep it for commercial waters.

Step 8

Have fun.
